New practitioner at Cure By Nature

Tracey Goulding: Acupuncturist and SCENAR therapist, MBAcC
My interests are in fertility/IVF support, pregnancy care, pain relief and injury recovery. I am a University of Westminster trained traditional Chinese medicine acupuncturist but also bring Scenar therapy, aromatherapy and massage to my treatments. Scenar therapy is relatively new to the UK. It represents a revolutionary new approach which marries orthodox Western medical practice and cutting-edge electronic technology with the traditional knowledge of the Far East. Developed for the Russian space programme, the Scenar device was immediately dubbed the ‘Star Trek’ device by the press because of its origins and its similarity to the ‘all-curing’ medical scanner used in the series. If you, or someone you know, is in pain, you will find it is one of the most effective treatments available. As a member of the British Acupuncture Council, I offer a professional as well as friendly approach to my treatments.

Cure By Nature has a number of practitioners who can help you with the management of
this debilitating condition
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a mixture of abdominal symptoms for which there is no apparent cause.
Symptoms include constipation, diarrhoea, bloating and abdominal pain.
It is the most common condition seen by gastroenterologists and some estimates suggest that as many as one in
five adults in the UK have IBS at any one time. IBS is more
common in women.
In the UK about 13 per cent of women and 5 per cent of men
have IBS.
What are the symptoms of IBS?
IBS symptoms and can start at any age, but are most common
in late teenage years or early adulthood.
The four most common symptoms are:
constipation
abdominal pain
bloating that usually subsides overnight and
returns the following day
diarrhoea.
How is irritable bowel syndrome diagnosed?
The diagnosis is often made on the basis that typical symptoms are present, particularly in younger people.
Chronic functional abdominal pain (CFAP)is the ongoing presence of abdominal pain for which there is no
known medical explanation. It is quite similar to, but less common than, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and
many of the same treatments for IBS can also be of benefit to those with CFAP. The fundamental difference bet-
ween IBS and CFAPis that in CFAP, unlike in IBS, there is no change in bowel habits such as constipation or
diarrhea. Bowel dysfunction is a necessary diagnostic criteria of IBS.
CFAPis characterized by chronic pain, with no physical explanation or findings (no structural, infectious, or
mechanical causes can be found).
As conventional medicine has no treatment for this often debilatating condition, many people turn to alternative
medicine for help.
At Cureby Naturewe treat IBS with
Naturopathic nutrition:to improve digestion, reduce discomfort, constipation and diarrhea; some herbal reme-
dies may me prescribed in combination with a diet and some exercise
Acupuncture: this is often the most effective treatment to reduce stress and pain rapidly, it has good long term
effect in making the whole digestive system work better.
Homeopathy: excellent treatment if there are strong psychological factors causing the IBS; homeopathy is often
very effective for functional disorders of the guts such as bloaing, colitis, CFAPand IBS
Chinese herbal Medicine:low dosage of Chinese Herbal Formulae are extremely effective, given as capsules
or powders they are easy to take. Chinese Herbal Medicine is one of the oldest medicine in the world, with thou-
dands years of clinical experience to back it up.
When treating IBS it is important to take into account all the factors that can affect the digestive function.
At Cure By Nature we take a holistic approach to help, and a consultation will take about an hour.
During this time, your practitioner will take a full case history ans devise a treatment plan that is suitable to your
needs and to your condition.

what are the differences between cold and flu
It is easy to tell the difference between the flu and a simple cold.
The flu makes you miserable and the flu's symptoms come on suddenly (within three to six hours) and include a high fever of 38 to 40 degrees Centigrade(102ºf), headache, often severe aches and pains, tiredness, weakness and chest discomfort or coughing. Sometimes it involves a stuffy nose, sneezing and sore throat.
A cold, on the other hand, rarely causes more than a mild fever, headache, exhaustion or aches and pains. Its most obvious symptoms are a stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and a mild to moderate cough.
It is important to see your doctor for evaluation if any of the following occurs:
Severe, continuous vomiting or diarrhea lasting 8 hrs. or any vomiting and diarrhea not improved after 24 hrs; fever over 39 degrees Centigrade (102ºf), earache, shaking chills, difficulty breathing, skin rash, unusual lethargy or delirium, change in cough or nasal secretions to thick green or gray, uncontrollable cough or cough sounding like a "seal bark"
Alternative first aid for cough and sore throat:
Rest. Drink extra fluids. Gargle with warm salt water..
Chamomile tea is particularly effective in treating pain because of its soothing nature, and can be taken by all age groups. Sage is beneficial in treating pharyngitis and other throat pains by reducing inflammation and protecting the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.
Garlic, a natural antibiotic, can be helpful in the speeding up of recovery and removal of bacteria; Garlic can be taken in pill form by all age groups
An infusion of fresh Thyme with the addition of a teaspoon of lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey is very effective, this can be taken three times a day.
Essential oil: put a drop of Tea Tree oil, Clove oil or sweet thyme oil on your tooth brush, the normal amount of tooth paste and brush your teeth normally; the essential oil act as a potent disinfectant, mixed with the tooth paste.
Homeopathic remedies:
Nux vomica: sensitive to least draught; sneezing from itching in nose, throat, trachea; great heat, burning but if uncover become chilly
Best alternative treatment:
Acupuncture: eliminate symptoms, facilitate recovery, boost immune system
Homeopathy: Clear symptoms quickly
Essential oils: antiviral, antibacterial, decongestant
At Cure by Nature with use a combination of treatment to treat colds and flu:
acupuncture is an excellent treatment to boost immune defences and alleviate symptoms; combined with Cure By nature specially formulated homeopathic combinations, we help people make a good recovery

Scientific research shows that acupuncture increase the rate of success of IVF
The first important study on this subject was carried in 2002 by Wolfgang E. Paulus, M.D.,[a] Mingmin Zhang, M.D et Al , and was followed by many across the world.
In February 2008, Dr Eric Manheimer, Grant Zhang, Laurence Udoff et Al published a meta-analysis of 108 studies, from which seven were selectedfor their sound scientific basis.
The encouraging result indicate that acupuncture almost double the rate of success of IVF (from 26.3% to 42.5% ) in the Paulus study, and increase the rate by 65% in the more recent research from Manheimer.

Mrs. Chandrayee Basu
Counsellor & Psychotherapist
I am a qualified counsellor and integrative psychotherapist with a Masters degree in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I am registered with the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and follow its code of conduct and ethical requirements. I have over 6 years of experience, working primarily with issues of self esteem, depression, stress, anxiety, anger and bereavement. I offer discreet, sensitive confidential one-to-one counselling and psychotherapy sessions in South West London from my clinic in the Wimbledon/Southfields area.
PJ Cousin director of Cure By Nature on fertility and pregnancy:
At the heart of Nappy Valley, in Southfields, at Cure By
Nature you will find a team of well qualified therapist with many
years of experience in helping forward thinking women with
fertility, conception, pregnancy and the early years of their
children. We offer the following treatments specifically for
pre-conception, fertility, pregnancy and babies: Acupuncture,
Herbal medicine, Homeopathy, Osteopathy, Cranio-sacral osteopathy,
Nutritional ad- vice, Pregnancy Pilates classes, Pregnancy massage.
Infertility has long been a common problem in our human history,
and still continues to be a problem in the modern era. Generally
speaking, as many as one in every six couples requires help from
special- ists to treat infertility. Fortunately, Western Medicine
has developed various treatment methodologies, especially the new
assisted reproductive technology, which does increase the success
rate. Despite this, nearly half of the couples among those who get
treated by Western Medicine still fail to conceive. Women
undergoing fertility treatment could have their chances of success
boosted by acupuncture. German researchers said they have increased
success rates by almost 50% in women having in vitro fertilisation
(IVF). During pregnancy, many women are reluctant to take drugs in
pregnancy and are looking for safe al- ternatives. Many common
ailments associated with pregnancy are hard to alleviate
conventionally but can be treated effectively with a combination of
natural therapies. Acupuncture, in particular, and ho- meopathy can
help with: FIRST TRIMESTER - 0-12 WEEKS Nausea (morning sickness
can be severe and often goes on until week 16) fatigue, stress,
anxiety, constipation, miscarriage SECOND TRIMESTER - 13-28 WEEKS .
There are still many common complaints that you may experience,
which can make life more uncom- fortable than it needs to be.
Regular sessions of acupuncture can help to minimise many of these,
par- ticularly: backache and sciatica, constipation and
haemorrhoids, headaches, depression, heartburn THIRD TRIMESTER -
28-40 WEEKS Acupuncture has a valuable role to play in the final
stage of pregnancy as well. In particular, it can help with:
backache and sciatica pubic pain haemorrhoids breech babies
exhaustion induction of labour. Pregnancy Pilates is probably the
safest and most useful exercise for a pregnant woman, we offer
pregnancy Pilates in our studio, as well a postnatal exercise to
help getting back into shape. For both mother and baby,
cranio-sacral osteopathy is a gentle yet powerful treatment very
useful for alleviating birth trauma in babies, and fro the mother,
before and after birth. We also offer homeopathy for labour and
recovery form childbirth, homeopathy is also wonderfully effective
for baby colic, and for teething. Our friends from the National
Childbirth Trust (NCT) run regular antenatal courses that fully
booked at least six month ahead. We are happy to offer you a free
twenty-minute initial consultation with our fertility and pregnancy
co-ordinator where we will introduce you to the wide range of
resources available to keep you and your baby happy and healthy
PJ Cousin director of Cure By Nature on Counselling and Psychotherapy
At Cure By Nature we are often asked what is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy:
Most of the time, counseling and psychotherapy refer to the same thing.
Technically, the word counselor means advisor, or one who advises or teaches. In counseling it is understood that two individuals are putting their heads together in an intellectual manner in order to solve a problem.
Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is a term that, generally speaking, refers to the “treatment of mental and emotional disorders through the use of psychological techniques designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insights into problems, with the goal being personality growth and behavior modification”
Across most areas of counseling, typical work activities include:
establishing a relationship of trust and respect with clients;
agreeing a counseling contract to lay down what will be covered in sessions (including confidentiality issues);
encouraging clients to talk about issues they feel they cannot normally share with others;
actively listening to client concerns and empathizing with their position;
accepting without bias the issues raised by clients;
helping clients towards a deeper understanding of their concerns;
challenging any inconsistencies in what clients say or do;
helping clients to make decisions and choices regarding possible ways forward;
referring clients to other sources of help, as appropriate; keeping records.
"Psychotherapy" on the other hand is generally a longer-term treatment, which focuses more on gaining insight into chronic physical and emotional problems.
Its focus is on the patient's thought processes and way of being in the world rather than specific problems.
In actual practice there may be quite a bit of overlap between the two.
A therapist may provide counseling with specific situations and a counselor may function in a psychotherapeutic manner.
Generally speaking, however, psychotherapy requires more skill than simple counseling.
It is conducted by professionals trained to practice psychotherapy such as a psychiatrist, a trained counselor, social worker or psychologist.
While a psychotherapist is qualified to provide counseling, a counselor may or may not possess the necessary training and skills to provide psychotherapy.
Most of the time, counseling and psychotherapy refer to the same thing.
In all probability, there is some counseling and some psychotherapy intermittently taking place in the course of any single therapeutic hour.
Sonia Francis, is a qualified and experienced therapist with ten years of professional experience in counseling adults and young people.

Homeopathy offers relief for allergy sufferers
Homeopathy offers relief for allergy sufferers
Homeopaths in
south-west London are
targeting people
with
allergies this
summer as more and more people turn to complementary and
alternative medicine to help with their
symptoms.
This
year’s Homeopathy Awareness Week (June 14 – 21) will highlight how
homeopathic remedies can not only tackle the symptoms when they
happen, but by triggering the body’s own system of healing, can
help to stop the symptoms occurring in the first
place.
Our
resident registered
homeopath,
Tamlyn Martins, will be
available for consultations and advice at Cure By Nature during the
course of the week.
She
said: “Homeopathy is patient-centred and a remedy is prescribed
based on the patient’s symptoms and how they experience them.
Remedies are mostly drawn from natural substances which are highly
diluted and therefore non-toxic, making them suitable for all ages,
including children and pregnant women.”
Research
evidence backs up the use of homeopathy for people who suffer with
allergic conditions. Last year
The Society was invited to give evidence at a House of Lords
inquiry (1), which concluded that allergies were reaching epidemic
proportions.
Results
from a six-year study at Bristol Homeopathic Hospital showed the
most marked improvements in children, with 89 per cent of under 16s
with asthma, and 68 per cent with eczema, reporting improvement
(2)
There
are also a number of randomised controlled trials with positive
results for the use of homeopathy in the treatment of hayfever and
allergic rhinitis.
Symptoms
of allergy are on the increase, affecting approximately one in four
of the population in the UK at some time in their lives, with
numbers increasing by five per cent each year, and as many as
half of all those affected being children (3).
Allergic
symptoms occur when the body’s immune system over-reacts,
interpreting a usually harmless substance as a
threat.
This
year’s awareness week is in collaboration with Nelsons, the UK’s
leading manufacturer of natural medicines.
Homeopathy
works on the principle of “like cures like” - that is, a substance
that would cause symptoms in a healthy person is used to help those
same symptoms in illness. Remedies are highly diluted and
non-toxic.
Interest
in homeopathy is growing – a Mintel report (July 2007) reported
that the sale of homeopathic treatments, such as arnica cream had
seen a 24 per cent growth since 2002.
The
Society of Homeopaths is the largest body of professional
homeopaths in Europe. Established in 1978, it has 1,500 registered
members, who are fully insured and agree to practise in accordance
with a strict Code of Ethics & Practice. A copy of The
Society’s Code of Ethics & Practice plus the register is
available on www.homeopathy-soh.org.
Homeopathy has
been available on the NHS since its inception in 1948 and there are
five NHS homeopathic hospitals.
In 2000, The
House of Lords Select Committee on Science & Technology defined
Homeopathy as a Group One therapy, commenting that “Under The
Society of Homeopaths, the non-medical homeopaths have organised
themselves well and their professional organisation should mean the
transition to statutory regulation does not present too great an
upheaval.” (House of Lords Select Committee on Science &
Technology, Session 1999-2000, p52)

Hayfever is one of the commonest allergies affecting a massive 12 million people in the UK.
Many people experience symptoms similar to hay fever all year round.
Doctors call this perennial rhinitis. Although symptoms affecting the eyes are unusual, sufferers have persistent attacks of sneezing and permanent runny nose. This allergy is frequently mistaken for the permanent 'cold' and children especially may be wrongly prescribed repeated courses of antibiotics. Frequent causes are mould and house dust mite, animal hair.
Allergic reactions such as hay fever happen when the immune system overreacts to a normally harmless substance. This triggers the production of an antibody called immunoglobulin E or IgE. IgE causes the release of some highly irritating substances, including histamine, which produce redness, heat and swelling (inflammation).
The most common symptoms are sneezing, wheezing, shortness of breath, a runny or blocked-up nose, watery and bloodshot eyes, rash, itchiness, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Health complications from repeated hay fever attacks, year after year, may be an even more serious problem. Chronic sinusitis, an inflammation of the sinus cavities is one of these complications.
Hay fever and cross reactivity:
Those with pollen allergies are susceptible to cross-reactive foods. This occurs when the over active immune system cannot distinguish the difference between pollen proteins and food proteins. When the immune system recognizes a “cross-reactive” protein, symptoms manifest.
Here are a few examples of cross reactivity:
Alder Pollen - almonds, apples, celery, cherries, hazel nuts, parsley, peaches, and pears.
Grass Pollen - melons, oranges, swiss chard, tomatoes, watermelons and wheat.
Lily: Asparagus, Chives, Garlic, Leek, Onion.
Conventional treatment for hay fever:
Conventional treatment is mainly symptomatic:
Antihistamines ease most of the symptoms, but are not so good at relieving nasal congestion and may cause drowsiness.
Decongestant nose sprays are not usually advised for more than a few days. They have an immediate effect to clear a blocked nose. . However, if you use a decongestant nose spray for more than 5-7 days, a 'rebound' more severe congestion of your nose may develop.
Hay fever and allergies have increased by four times in the last 20 years.
Self help for Hay fever:
As a rule pollen levels are highest in the morning and early evening, but weather conditions make an enormous difference to pollen levels - hot dry weather or wind increase levels, whereas rain washes pollen out of the air. When pollen is high, keep windows in both cars and buildings shut, and avoid being outdoors, particularly in grassy spaces. When you do go outside, wear sunglasses, and wash your hair afterwards.
Alternative medicine is often very effective in treating hay fever and other allergies:
Acupuncture: beside rapid symptom relief, acupuncture can bring long term improvement.
Homeopathic remedies for allergic rhinitis include: Allium cepa, Euphrasia, Pusatilla, Nux vomica.
Herbal supplements for allergic rhinitis include chamomile, Echinacea, Goldenseal, cleavers, elderberry , and eyebright .
Allergy test is to be recommended as hay fever sufferers are often sensitive to other allergens, and cross reactivity with certain foods can aggravate or prolong their symptoms.

The benefits of Osteopathy for Children with Nita Mistry
What is Osteopathy
Osteopathy
is a system of healing which focuses on derangement of tissues and
their effects in the body. This follows the concept of structure
governs functions.
Health problems can be caused by number of factors including
environment, bacterial, viral, organism, nutritional imbalances and
allergies. When the body is more in alignment, it can deal with
outside influences more efficiently.
Paediatric
Osteopathy
This
is a branch of Osteopathy that specialises in the treatment of
young children. Babies and young children have specific
requirements.
Paediatric Osteopathy uses specific treatment techniques known as
Cranial Osteopathy. This technique involves palpation, and
detecting changes in the rhythm, of movements in the primary
respiratory mechanism. The general movement of the membranes, and
the pulsatile flow of fluids, passing through organs and tissues.
Although treatment is not, directly aimed at a specific point.
Paediatric Osteopathy emphasises in treatment to areas where there
is a disturbance.
How
does Osteopathy work
The guiding principle of Osteopathy is to look after rather than
cure diseases. Given the opportunity the body will sort itself
out.
Osteopathy aids the recovery by releasing strains of winding
fascias and tissues. Alignment of bones in correct position thus
influencing a balance physiological processes and promoting
drainage of lymph tissues where necessary.
Activation of other nervous and immune responses are also vastly
helped with Osteopathy.
The nervous system contributes by controlling the regulation of
fluid exchange and maintaining correct fluid pH balance to the
blood and organ system, supplying blood to all limbs and tissues.
For example, reducing the congestion of lymph and releasing tension
in the upper respiratory muscles generally helps a child with
asthma. The swallowing of meconium may cause irritation of airways,
thus tightening of soft tissue linings, which upsets the breathing
mechanism. Complaints of ear infections can be due to temporal bone
dysfunction where the drainage of the eustachian tube is incomplete
giving recurrent ear infections, because stasis and congestion of
fluid exists.
Some delivery instruments used such as a ventous or forceps can
cause compression of cranial bones and compromising the foramina’s
and the existing cranial nerves.
The physical traumas may present with distortion in the shape of
the babies’ head, later on developing visual problems, hearing
difficulties or impaired speech and mental development. These signs
may not be apparent until a lot later in childhood or adolescent in
some cases as an adult. The cranial nerves innervate sense organs
and important structures inside the brain.
Osteopathy is very effective for these kind of problems and
emotional traumas may it be a fall or a fright. Babies and young
children are very sensitive and display signs of shock in numerous
ways.
Altered digestion functions are affected by abnormal tension within
the soft tissue affecting organ function. Thus putting strains on
ligamentous attachments or disturbed fluid drainage.
An Osteopathic check up is always advisable for new born babies.
There is no minimum age, usually the sooner the better as the
membranes are easier to release.
The mothers health invariably affects the health and growth of the
mother.
Mothers can also benefit from a check up to help release stress and
in some case post delivery trauma within the Pelvic

Common uses for Manuka Honey by Simon Kingston
The unique active UMF manuka honey from New Zealand is gaining ever increasing international fame for the natural healing properties that are found in some versions of this honey.
Although there are many areas where it can help, and where anecdotal reports show positive results, here we will focus on 5 of the more common uses of the properly tested ‘UMF’ manuka honey, including the areas that have the most actual supporting research.
First, a quick summary of what we are referring to: UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) labled manuka honey is those batches that have been independently tested in New Zealand and proven to have sufficient levels of the extra antibacterial activity to meet the criteria to carry the ‘UMF’ logo on their label. This does not refer to all manuka honey! (and does not refer to any of the other similar terms some people are trying to use).
The 5 common uses looked at below are: Wounds / wound treatment; leg ulcers; burns; digestive problems; coughs / colds.
Wounds / Wound treatment
This has been the area receiving most attention, and where much of the research has focused. Firstly, all honey has some antibacterial activity to help with wounds in the form of hydrogen peroxide. The additional properties in some batches of the manuka variety make it even more suitable. Not only can honey attack existing infection in a wound, but it is able to create a barrier over the wound area – preventing further bacteria from entering. Very useful.
The range of amino acids, vitamins and trace elements and easily assimilable sugars have a beneficial nutrient effect on the newly regenerating tissues. Equally important in regard to new tissue growth in wounds, is the process of changing dressings. Using honey prevents direct contact between the dressing and new tissue, so that disturbance is reduced when dressings are changed.
How to apply to a wound: place some directly onto the wound area, then apply some also to the dressing before placing it over the wound.
Leg Ulcers
Leg ulcers that are not healing are an unfortunate occurance for sufferers, and worse cases can detrimentally affect mobility.
The same properties that make manuka honey great for wounds in general also apply to leg ulcers. Although further clinical evidence is required, with several studies around the world underway, there is quite a bit of support from anecdotal reports of the active manuka honey helping with leg ulcers that were not responding to conventional treatment. This honey’s effect on reducing bad odour that can come from leg ulcers has also been appreciated.
Burns
An area that once again has many similarities to it use in general wounds. Honey’s usefulness in preventing infection by its barrier effect can be important here. Better relief from pain has also been reported. Plus, as part of its ability to keep a wound area moist and its positive nutrient effect on tissue regeneration, it also helps in reducing scarring.
Digestive Problems
Having a healthy digestive system is important for your overall health. This is an area that so far has received a lot less research attention compared to honey’s use for wounds. As such, it is predominantly anecdotal support of its benefits. However the natural antibacterial and antibiotic properties available in genuine UMF manuka honey will help to fight bacteria infections in the gut too. Being a completely natural product, and with the majority of people not suffering from an allergy to honey, it is an option for many people without having to worry about possible side effects.
Some of the uses people take it for are: to help against acid reflux; bacterial infections in the stomach; stomach and peptic ulcers; diarrhea – if you have eating something that hasn’t agreed with you and you get the first stages of diarhea soon after, a couple of teaspoons of high UMF factor honey can help settle things down again with in an hour or two.
Cough and Colds
Why is it often suggested that you have a drink of lemon and honey when you are suffering from a cough or cold? Because historically it is a home remedy people have used, and found to help them. Using an active manuka honey is even more beneficial because you will be getting its extra antibacterial properties. Manuka honey’s quite distinctive strong honey taste also make it a pleasant remedy to be taking (like any flavour, there are always some people who will not find it to their liking, but the majority do enjoy it.).
Now there are even combination natural remedies for coughs and colds that make use of this, such as combining it with propolis another bee product that has long been used for its healthy qualities – after all the bees use it to protect their hives from disease.
A full range of genuine manuka honeys and other bee based health products are available from The New Zealand Honey Shop (online) or their physical store co-located with the Cure By Nature clinic in Southfields.
February
adult and children coming with sinusitis, rhinitis, sore throat etc.
Conventional medical doctor can prescribe Paracetamol for flu and cold,
antihistamine for allergies.
Homeopathy can provide sufferers with a good alternative: there are two very popular
homeopathic remedies for flu: Ocillococcinum and Mucococcinum; both are safe to
use with babies, young children and pregnant women.
For the common cold, Echinacea tincture, propolis, Manuka honey are very effective.
Allergies to tree pollen are now starting to cause runny nose and itchy throat, because
the pollen from the Birch Family (Betulaceae) which include birch, alder, hazel, are
all flowering in January and February.
Acupuncture and homeopathy are very successful for the treatment of these
conditions.
February this year is also a leap year:
Leap Year has been the traditional time that women can propose marriage. In many of
today's cultures, it is okay for a woman to propose marriage to a man. Society doesn't
look down on such women. However, that hasn't always been the case. When the
rules of courtship were stricter, women were only allowed to pop the question on one
day every four years. That day was February 29th.
Good luck ladies!
Finally, Valentine day is also upon us:
The first interpretation has this celebration originating as a pagan tradition in the third
century. During this time hordes of hungry wolves roamed outside of Rome where
shepherds kept their flocks. The God Lupercus, was said to watch over the shepherds
and their flocks and keep them from the wolves. Every February the Romans
celebrated a feast called Lupercalia to honour Lupercus so that no harm would come
to the shepherds and their flocks.
In 496 Pope Gelasius declared the day in honour of St. Valentine. Through the
centuries the Christian holiday became a time to exchange love messages and St.
Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. Lovers' quarrels come under his
jurisdiction and, naturally, he is the patron saint of engaged couples and of anyone
wishing to marry
An other traditional explanation is that on February 14th the Birds begin to mate.
The Europeans also believed that on February 14th the birds began to choose their
mates.
In fact Chaucer, in his "Parlement of Foules," wrote: "For this was Seynt Valentine's
Day when every foul cometh ther to choose his mate."
John Donne wrote:
Hail Bishop Valentine! whose day this is;
All the air is thy diocese,
And all the chirping choristers
And other birds are thy parishioners:
Thou marryest ever year
The lyric lark and the grave whispering dove;
The sparrow that neglects his life for love,
The household bird with the red stomarcher;
Celebrations
Thous mak'st the blackbird speed as soon,
As doth the goldfinch or the halcyon . . .
This day more cheerfully than ever shine,
This day which might inflame thyself, old Valentin
Happy Valentine!
