What is Pilates?
“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. In order to achieve happiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body. If at the age of 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young."
Joseph H. Pilates
The Pilates Method is a unique approach to exercise that develops body awareness, improving and changing the body's postural and alignment habits whilst increasing flexibility and ease of movement. Everyday activities such as sitting, standing, running, playing sports, going to the gym and dancing may strengthen some muscle groups, but not all. Muscle imbalance can lead to bulky shortened muscles, fatigue, discomfort, pain and in extreme cases immobility. The Pilates method creates a balanced workout to condition the whole body.
The Pilates teacher uses their knowledge of the anatomy to create a comprehensive exercise programme for each client with the aim of restoring a greater sense of balance, strength and vitality throughout the body. It is this holistic approach that sets the Method apart from many other forms of exercise. Indeed, osteopaths, physiotherapists and general practitioners are now recommending Pilates as one of the safest and beneficial forms of exercise today.

Suzi Bennett
I have always been an
active person and deeply interested in maintaining a healthy
body. I studied dance and theatre at college where I learnt
the importance of posture and movement, before going on to work
within the modelling industry both in the UK and in Australia.
After several years I became disillusioned with the promotion of
skinny bodies, fasting and unhealthy body image I encountered and
left the industry.
A couple of years later whilst working behind a desk in the city I was struck by very painful neck condition due to the culmination of an untreated horse riding accident as a child and sitting badly at my desk in a stressful office environment. On my Physiotherapist’s recommendation, I started a course of private Pilates. My teacher was an inspiration and I quickly realised the benefits of the Pilates method.
I trained to be a Pilates Foundation matwork teacher at the Scott Studio located in Somerset. The Pilates Foundation is renowned for its highest quality of training and education. On completing over 500 hours of teacher training and practice I achieved accredited matwork member status and have been teaching ever since building a loyal client base and promoting a healthy body image and a feeling of strength and vitality in all my classes.
